The University of Louisville, Glasgow/Barren County Family Medicine Residency program is committed to the future of medicine and the training of its practitioners through its focus on individualized learning. Established in 1997 through the cooperative efforts of local leaders, T.J. Samson Community Hospital, and the University of Louisville, the residency program concentrates on training physicians for practice in a rural-based community that spans several counties and supports nearly 200,000 people. T.J. Samson Community Hospital, a progressive, financially secure center which recently underwent a 22 million dollar expansion, provides residents with the unique opportunity to individualize their training because there are no competing residencies in the hospital.
Nearly all rotations are spent one-on-one with the attending physician. These dedicated and friendly attendings provide additional learning opportunities in subspecialty areas while an outstanding faculty provide the core training opportunities. Also, family practice residents have full access and admitting privileges to all areas of the hospital, including the ICU/CCU, E.R., pediatric wards, newborn nursery, the geriatric psychiatry ward, endoscopy, labor and delivery, and same-day surgery. Residents learn multiple procedures and skills first-hand from attendings who are eager to teach. Through this concentration on individualized learning, the residency provides excellent training in all areas of Family Medicine. Upon graduation, residents are ready to practice in many different settings.
In addition to the ample educational opportunities, the program offers impressive salary and benefits, an excellent call schedule, a friendly work atmosphere, and a strong curriculum. With enough elective time, residents have the freedom to individualize their education.
